About the project

In 2012, an assessment team travelled to Bolivia to visit an organization called AMe Bolivia. AMe’s founder, Gheorghe Micoti, who is originally from Romania, has been volunteering in Bolivia for over 10 years now. He began working with Street Boys at an Orphanage called CERENID where ABW has been working for many years. After becoming accustomed to the culture and the language, Mr. Micoti began to realize something. When asked why he left CERENID he says, “Everybody wants to help children, you show someone a child who is starving or hurting and many people will want to help, but what about those who aren’t children? Who is helping them?” Gheorghe never questions the need that children in Bolivia have from starvation, malnutrition, and abuse, but what he began to notice is that, along with the Bolivian government, most organizations are overlooking the marginalized group like people with physical and mental disabilities who are in desperate need of help with no one to hear their cry. Those who cannot afford health care simply go without. Our team visited 1 of 3 hospitals in Bolivia that serve the general public. Those who come into the hospital are assessed by the medical staff but if they are unable to pay for the care, they will simply lay on the cot until they pay, leave, or die. Keep in mind that in Bolivia, patients do not go to the hospital for a cold or flu; the patients we interacted with were in desperate need of serious medical treatments such as blood transfusions and amputations. This is where AMe Bolivia steps in with hospital help. They are working to fundraise locally and internationally to pay for the surgeries and provide the after care and rehabilitation required.
