Providence SDA High School is a new educational facility built in the village of San Antonio which is located just 21 miles west of Punta Gorda in the tropical jungle region of southern Belize. This is the poorest and most economically deprived part of the country. The high school was developed particularly to provide education for the Mayan people of the area.
Providence began in September, 2010 with 42 students in Form 1 (grade 9). A class was added each year until now in its fifth year of operation there are 103 students spread throughout Forms I – IV (grades 9-12). Next year it is expected there will be at least 140 students if rezoning occurs resulting in many more students being part of this school’s jurisdiction.

Over the past four years the school board, principal and staff have worked very hard to provide a good education for their students. Good progress has been made. However, one specific need continues to stand out. A SCIENCE LAB IS URGENTLY NEEDED. The Ministry of Education is expressing concerns arising as a result of the lack of Sc Lab facilities at Providence. Students in Form IV (grade 12) are preparing to take their CXC exams in May and June. Their success on these exams is crucial as by passing at least 6 of these exams successfully students will have the opportunity to get a scholarship from the Government of Belize for continuing their education at the university/college level.
The science teacher has put forth much effort to lay a strong foundation in the science program of the students but he is handicapped in completing his instruction because of not having a lab for the students to have hands-on-experience. The lab will be an asset for all as theory takes on practical learning through demonstrations and participation.
