Project / Bolivia Water Project

About This Project

Water is a necessity. There are so many individuals living in Bolivia living without clean water. Due to the conditions of the water that is available, disease is evident in many of the smaller Bolivian communities.  Bolivian- Canada Clean Water Network ( BCCWN) has partnered with ABW to help a marginalized neighborhood in Ascensión de Guarayos, Bolivia. Many individuals in the community suffer frequent gastrointestinal illnesses as a result of a lack of basic services such as water and sanitation. The effects of these illnesses are compounded by malnutrition. The proposed pilot project is a multifaceted, interdisciplinary initiative that will seek to improve children´s health in La Floresta in a holistic manner that can be replicated in other communities.

The project will seek to reduce gastrointestinal illnesses through: the construction of composting latrines and compost bins to reduce water contamination and control insect vectors, and the installation of BioSand Filters in homes in order to purifydrinking water. The problem of malnutrition will be addressed through nutrition workshops and the strengthening of a demonstration garden in a neighborhood of Ascensión to encourage vegetable production.

Improving children’s health through sanitation, water treatment, and nutrition in marginalized neighborhoods of Ascensión de Guarayos, Santa Cruz, Bolivia (Phase 2)

The children of outlying neighbourhoods in Ascensión de Guarayos, Bolivia, suffer frequent gastrointestinal illnesses as a result of insufficient basic services such as potable water and sanitation, a situation that is further compounded by malnutrition. The proposed pilot project is a multifaceted, interdisciplinary initiative that will seek to improve children´s health for 20 families in peri-urban neighborhoods of Ascensión de Guarayos in a holistic manner that can be replicated in other communities. Specifically, this project will seek to reduce gastrointestinal illnesses through: the construction of composting latrines and compost bins to reduce water contamination and control insect vectors, the installation of rainwater harvesting systems and BioSand Filters in homes in order to improve access to safe drinking water. The problem of malnutrition will be addressed through nutrition workshops and the strengthening of a demonstration garden in a neighborhood of Ascensión to encourage vegetable production in peri urban areas. The results of the project will be extended to neighboring communities and regions through radio advertisements, coordination with local governments, as well as the dissemination of a detailed summary report and reference manual written.

The project will be implemented over an 8 month period and will cost $15150.00 USD. The work will be divided into two cycles, the first of which will cost $7497.50 USD, and the second of which will cost $7652.50 USD.
