Project / Agano Junior Academy  / We have completed our goals for this project

Project Story

ABW discovered this school in 2008, cramped in a dingy rental facility and borrowed space from a church. We supplied desks, books and a teacher subsidy, but could not invest in structures until 2011, when the parents bought a small building a few blocks away. A Czech agency began renovating the new building and building an addition, but work stalled. ABW completed the work, which includes four classrooms, a staff room, kitchen, four toilets and two washrooms. In 2013, we added a second storey to the building, providing five more classrooms, five toilets, and one office.

About the project

Agano Junior Academy is a preschool to Grade 8 school in the Dandora suburb east of Nairobi, founded in 1991 by current head teacher Grace Kasandi. It is a “complementary” school, meaning it is recognized by, but not registered with, the government, which occasionally provides minor funding for books. In 2013, 326 students occupied 13 classrooms: about 260 in the nine classrooms of a newly renovated and constructed building, with the rest learning in four dingy classrooms provided by a nearby church.

Our involvement

Notable features

  • Dandora is a large slum, rife with pollution and crime.
  • The school’s highest score on Grade 8 national exams in 2013 was 402 out of 500, with several others close to 400, while the highest score in the nearest public school was 380.
  • Students from the school’s earliest classes have been succeeding in post-secondary programs, including nursing, statistics, water engineering and commerce.
