Children: 32
Staff: 11
Invested: $67,800

About the project

Located in the Gilgil community southeast of Nakuru, St. Ann Baby and Children’s Home is an orphanage operated by Irene Wainaina and her husband Ayub Njenga. It was founded in 2007 while the couple, native Kenyans, were living in England. She has been on site managing the orphanage since 2010; her husband joined her in 2013. The 28 children live in a new, four-bedroom house. A two-room school with toilets sits on the adjacent property. Nine staff run the orphanage, with two teachers at the school. A large garden provides some of the food for the home.

Our Involvement

ABW initially supported the home with supplies and sponsorships until the new orphanage was built by the American foundation With My Own Two Hands on land donated by the couple. Then ABW built the school building.

Notable Features

• Many of the children at the orphanage were children of mothers who died of AIDS. The prospect for their adoption is low.
• Waianaina hopes to build four more houses with a maximum number of 15 children per house and a house “mother” in each.
