Project Story

Following the Civil War between the North and the South, many IDP camps were set up to house the internally displaced people (IDPs). The war ended in 2005 with the Comprehensive Peace agreement, but over 60% will never return as this has become their homes. Most are uneducated and lack the skills to find employment. The next generation needs to be educated to recover from this situation. ABW refurbished the girls’ school that was damaged by heavy rains and constructed a new building for wider use and education.

ADRA is keen to continue the program in Kosti following the ending of a large USAID project. The need of the communities, now that the water needs have been met, is for education for their children to break out of the cycle of poverty they are currently in. Without proper education, this is not possible. The schools are unable to cope with the volume of students. Classes have up to 140 children in them. Some have no roof or the walls have collapsed. Some classes are made of grass or meet under the trees. In many classes there are no seats and the children sit on the sandy floor. A survey has been done on all schools in the area. These three schools targeted are among the worst. Active parent Associations are keen to work with ADRA to ensure the best for their children. The Ministry of Education is unable to cope with the demands and can not do much more then supply teachers and textbooks for the children. The Humanitarian Aid Commission is also very supportive and is willing to give its full cooperation for this project.
