Dezam Primary School

After the earthquake in January 2010, A Better World became involved with some of the relief efforts, but soon began to move into development.vThe earthquake heavily affected much of rural Haiti, whether in the immediate zone of damage, or areas all throughout the country. Population increased in some cases by more than 50% putting strains on education, healthcare, and the food supply. One of the regions of highest internal migration post-quake was the central plateau, where this project is located.vDezam Primary School, in a very poor rural area, has had to confront the heavy burden of a doubling of its student body as a result of education opportunities in Port-au-Prince coming down in the quake. ABW constructed 6 new classrooms at this school.

East African Mission Orphanage

Located in Central Kenya near the busy city of Nakuru, East African Mission Orphanage (EAMO) is home to approximately 250 children, mostly orphans with some semi-orphans. Australians Ralph and May Spinks founded the orphanage in 1997. ABW helped create a long-term development plan with the Spinks in 2005. Work began with a well and large garden that year. By 2008, we had completed a large kitchen and dining hall and provided power equipment and drip irrigation to allow expansion of the garden. From 2009-12, ABW funded new dormitories for girls and boys and new classrooms for the school. In 2014, we completed an expansion to the kitchen-dining facility. We have also provided many supplements to operations such as pay for teachers or replacing mattresses in dorms.
