Chakareli Comprehensive School

About the Project:  The current classrooms at Chakareli School are in poor condition, with many condemned and unusable. Several others, though still in use, are deteriorating rapidly. Three classrooms are made of wood, and the Early Childhood Development (ECD) center is a fragile structure built from plastered Styrofoam. To improve the learning environment, we plan to construct six new classrooms at a new site, which will first require demolishing a few smaller buildings to make space.

About the Site: Chakareli Comprehensive School is located in the Nyaharuru area and is a new site for ABW. We have, however, worked with the head teacher, Stephen Wahome, many times before when he worked at a previous school. It has a student population of nearly 500 students and 19 teachers, with feeder ECDs off-site. The current classrooms at this school are in varying states of disrepair, but are all quite terrible. The school does have a solid borehole and other structurally sound buildings, and has good support from the parents who are eager to pitch in to make these projects happen.
