Wednesday, June 17, 2026 – Heading Home

While waiting for our flight this evening, we spent the morning at the Giraffe Center doing some shopping, and packing for the flight this evening. Four ladies continued their journey to Tanzania and left early to cross the border. Another very successful A Better World trip to Kenya with everyone delivered to the airport safely. The youngest of this group was thirteen, and the oldest eighty-five. Everyone connected with each other and formed new friendships, both here in Kenya and have made special memories together. Thank you to everyone who followed our trip, who supports A Better World projects.

Tuesday, June 16, 2026 – Last Day in Lamu

Our last day in Lamu started with historian Hamid on a tour of Lamu town. The town is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. we visited the fort, the markets, the streets, and then the rain came. It poured. Even the flight that was supposed to pick us up couldn’t land and turned around for the rains to stop. Fortunately, we were able to board the plane and arrive in Nairobi safely. We had a farewell dinner, and we’ll prepare to leave for home tomorrow.

Saturday, June 13, 2026 – Fig Tree Camp

For several hundreds who have traveled with us, we are back at the beautifully renovated Fig Tree Camp. Lots of hippos right across from our tents that we watch every evening going out and returning with a lot of noise at 4:30 a.m.

A small group started at the Talek Health Centre. It was 20 years ago We established the first clinic. It has expanded beyond belief by other partners. A Better World has just installed a dental chair so we went to see it. Next stop. was at the Enkotoria Clinic To visit Juma, our very first clinical officer that we began working with.

He was recognized by the community and A Better World for his service for more than 20 years for helping the people in Maasai Mara. On our way back to our camp, we were able to see some wildlife. Our last activity was the driver appreciation evening, as some are departing for Canada tomorrow and some are leaving for Lamu. We acknowledge and expressed our gratitude for the wonderful work our driver guides do in keeping us safe and showing us their country.

Friday, June 12, 2026 – Travel Day to Maasai Mara

Today was a travel day to the Maasai Mara. We saw various animals today. Some at a distance, some close up. The highlight for many today was the Bush lunch where we celebrated the graduation and engagement of Thirsa and Ben.

At the end of the day, some of us visited the dental clinic that we started over 20 years ago, which has grown by the efforts and partnership of others. Just a few weeks ago, we funded, in part, a dental chair. We were happy to see that it was installed. We are now at the renovated and upgraded Fig Tree Camp.

Rehab Team Blog – Thursday, June 11, 2026 – Naikara Health Centre and Primary Boarding School

We joined our partner Occupational Therapist at Naikara Health Centre today seeing young children who came for therapy. Several new families came while Michael was at the clinic this week, most encouraged by other mothers of children with disabilities. Some of our team also interacted with special needs students at Naikara Primary Boarding School in their therapy room. Encouraged by the commitment of teachers and administration in support of these children. The day ended with Michael taking us to a Maasai cattle market… but we didn’t buy any! We will take a few days break now before heading home.

Thursday, June 11, 2026 – Visiting Projects in Naikara

We are at the beautiful Mara Ki mana camp and left today to visit our projects in Naikarra. We stopped at some new schools we’d like to consider for 2027 and had meetings with the Chief of the area, Chief Moses, who taught at one of our schools, and then on to our biggest school of 1,900 students, with 825 boys and girls in residence. The rehab team was also there, visiting with the 35 students with disabilities. We provide Physio and OT services in partnership with the county. Gord Bontje And family are deeply invested in this project. We also visited the health center that Kathy Lacey and family helped start and expand. it is amazing to see these projects where local people have taken ownership and are now operating them with success.
