Neighbours, a local division of A Better World Canada, started its 2014 signature project on Monday – the third Neighbours project in Central Alberta and first in Red Deer. Each year, Neighbours takes on a renovation or expansion project for a family facing overwhelming circumstances, using volunteer labour and donated materials and funds. This year’s recipients are Angela Trca and Todd Bawtinheimer, who need renovations to their home to allow continued home care for their daughter Nyah. Eight-year-old Nyah was born with a chromosomal disorder that left her with severe medical and mobility issues. As she grows, it has become more challenging for her family to care for her in a home that was not designed for
accessibility, and existing equipment, such as the ceiling lift installed by the family, no longer meets their needs. Todd was seriously injured in a workplace accident recently, and the family’s income has been reduced, leaving them unable to fund the necessary improvements. Renovations will include upgrades to the bathroom, doorways and possibly living room to make these areas more accessible by wheelchair and to ease the provision of care. The project is
estimated to cost $20,000, including the value of donated labour and materials. Construction on the project is being led by Eagle Ridge Homes of Blackfalds. The family is available for interviews or photographs. Please contact Ronda Ziakris or Rob
Weich (above) to arrange interviews.
