KENYA: GILGIL PRIMARY SCHOOL

60th Birthday Project of Gord Bontje

Bondeni is the biggest slum in Gilgil, Kenya and as the years go by, its infrastructure is slowly collapsing, and its poor population are unable to support the needs of its school. Our goal here is to create a safe, healthy, and sustainable educational environment. 680 children currently attend the school – 360 boys and 320 girls. The school also employs 23 teachers, all of whom are paid by the government. Because, on average, one child dies every 20 seconds due to lack of proper sanitation, our first priority at Gilgil was to create functioning and quality toilets, and since their completion, we have moved on to address other needs including classroom renovation and the construction of new water harvesting systems.
