About the School
Lamu School for the mentally challenged was started in 1987 as a unit attached to Lamu Boys Primary School on Lamu Island. A year later, the unit was moved to the present site at Mokowe. The enrollment at that time was only five children. The enrollment grew to eleven children in 2004. The school is one of three schools in the county that enrolls learners with disabilities and has been a vital resource for the education of children with cognitive disabilities. It has also been ranked one of the top six schools in the country that teaches children with mental disabilities. Currently, there are over 100 students attending school here.
