KENYA: LESHUTA CLINIC

About the Site

Leshuta is a remote Masai village in the Rift Valley of Kenya in the Narok District, close to the border with Tanzania.  The Leshuta Clinic, staffed by two nurses, is a primary care free clinic and serves a population of 4,900 Maasai tribal people.  Most are local resident villagers in its Kenyan catchment area. But they also provide free care for perhaps 1,500 from a wider area, many of whom come in for care from Tanzania.  Accessible by many miles of dirt roads, it is a 4 1/2 hours’ drive southwest from Nairobi and is primarily an agricultural community of goat and cattle herders and farmers. Leshuta Clinic and its needs were referred to ABW by community members we have worked with previously at other nearby clinics.  The clinic refers emergencies to Naikarra, which poses a challenge due to the poor quality of the road in between the two clinics.  Significant renovations are necessary to make the clinic functional and safe. The community also began constructing a maternity ward for the hospital, (another great need), but that project is currently on hold. In the meantime, ABW can renovate the main clinic building to make it more serviceable for the community and its needs.
