KENYA: RAS KITAO PRESCHOOL

About the School

Ras Kitao is a small community on Manda Island that has been largely overlooked by government. There is no educational opportunity in the area. The Ras Kitao community developed as a settlement from Manda Maweni when an abandoned quarry was discovered and a group relocated to restart its operation. There is an estimated 200 families and 800 people in the village.  The village has developed a master plan for infrastructure and presented it to the Lamu County Council.

Primary students are walking 3 KM to a dock and boating to Shela primary school with labourers. Because of safety concerns and needing to leave the home by 5 AM to catch volunteer boats, the community would like to have a school up to Grade 4.
