We left Kericho early this morning, driving south to the Maasai Mara. After a week of long days spent trekking through fields and up hills, we were able to relax…part of the way. Halfway to the Mara from Kericho, the paved road disappears, and the rest of the way is spent bumping along rocky dirt paths.
Samuelle and Dr. Kiš with our van while we were stopped for gas.
We soon arrived at our hotel, but Eric had a surprise in store. We would spend our night off at the Fairmont Safari Club where we also had the opportunity to go on an evening game drive. Around the edge of the park we found huge herds of zebra and antelope, as well as lions and elephants.
The biggest surprise came when we were asked to leave our vehicle and continue on foot into the bush where we met two enormous white rhinoceros, maybe thirty feet away.
After returning from the game drive and having a bit of supper, we spent the rest of the evening recuperating from a long week. Tomorrow, we will make the drive (much of it off-road) to the Maasai Mara where our research will continue.
