Wheelchairs give kids independence

While ABW’s surgery and rehab program continues to help disabled children achieve independence, for some children the path to independence is best travelled in wheelchairs. Once each year, ABW purchases specially built, rugged wheelchairs that can handle the rougher terrain at some of the rural facilities where we work.

Michael Kirui (in the photo), an occupational therapist who implements ABW’s outreach program in Narok County, Kenya, delivers the wheelchairs to rural clinics and does repairs on other wheelchairs as well. The wheelchairs allow the children to participate in the world around them and are a great relief to their caregivers.
